Now is an excellent time to start looking for public sector tenders as Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden announced in April 2018 that in future the government will exclude suppliers from major government procurements if they cannot demonstrate fair and effective payment practices with their subcontractors.
UK government supports smaller suppliers
Oliver Dowden reiterated in April that the Government is committed to spending 33% cent of procurement spend with small businesses by 2022, whether directly or as part of the supply chain. He said that:
“Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy, and play a key role in helping us to build a strong, viable private sector that delivers value for taxpayers and jobs for millions all over the UK.”
“This government is listening to the business community and is committed to levelling the playing field for smaller suppliers to win work in the public sector”.
In the future companies that pay their supply chain suppliers late will not be rewarded with public sector contracts as the government wants to hold larger supply companies to account for their payment practices.
In response to Mr Dowden’s announcement the Federation of Small Businesses National Chairman, Mike Cherry said that the new package will “boost SME procurement” and “clamp down on poor payment practice throughout public procurement supply chains”.
